Garrett College welcomes Dr. Bob Spear, Chair of the Community College Cyber Summit (3CS) and Senior Advisor to the National CyberWatch Center, to speak on "Why Cyber Security Matters So Much Now" on Monday, October 24, 2016 from 3pm-5pm in Room 205 of the Continuing Education Building on the McHenry campus. The workshop will be provided in recognition of National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) this October, marking the 13th year of celebrating of the collaborative effort between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance to ensure that every American has the resources they need to stay safer and more secure online. Dr. Spear will address both the vulnerabilities created by our continuous and ever-expansive exposure to the world of cyberspace interconnectivity, and the solutions that cybersecurity professionals are diligently working to provide to strengthen the critical infrastructure. Some of the most promising solutions and strategies for maintaining a strong defense against cybercrime and cyber-threats derive from our national cybersecurity education centers, and the cybersecurity student competitions that have generated within that network. Dr. Spear will focus on the need for an understanding of cybersecurity across the curricula of all educational institutions, in order to produce a workforce of individuals across all disciplines who are literate in the importance of online and network information safety. He has worked in computer science, security and information technology in both the public and private sector and academia since 1968, and is a local Garrett County resident. Individuals are encouraged to bring tablets, laptops or smartphones to visit online resources that will be referenced in the workshop.
