Sense of Community
Placid lakes, rambling rivers, majestic mountain vistas, and quaint small towns - while these natural wonders and rural charms are enjoyed by citizens and vacationers alike, there is another treasure that sits at the heart of Garrett County. Tucked away in the panhandle of western Maryland, far from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, the Deep Creek Lake area has long been known for its friendly, inviting atmosphere. A sense of community is the very fabric of life here.
Neighbors know one another by name, and visitors are greeted by waves and smiles as they stroll along the tree-lined streets. These same visitors are often pleasantly suprised by the pride citizens have for their communities.
'There is a lot of caring and cooperative spirit here in Garrett County,' says Oakland's Mayor, Peggy Jamison, who moved to the area from Pittsburgh 26 years ago.
From the Chamber President
'There are so many families going back generations, but there are also lots of people selecting Garrett County for retirement, second homes, and the relocation of business,' says Nicole Christian, President of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce.
'Garrett County has the amenities of a resort, but the full-time residents here give it a sense of community. They make their lives here, start their businesses here, raise their families here.'
'The towns don't close up and hibernate when the tourists leave. It's like any other community, with youth soccer games and other sports, Friday night high school football games, homecomings, festivals and parades, dinners, and social gatherings'
