Garrett County takes economic growth seriously. Its 920 businesses - 20 of which employee 100 or more workers - support 9,670 workers. And while tourism and agriculture have long been the region's primary economic engines, diverse companies are increasingly setting up shop here.
'Tourism is a significant component of our economy and always will be,' says Frank Shap, deputy director and technology business development coordinator for the Garrett County Department of Economic Development.
'But I would also say specialty manufacturing, construction, professional technical services, and the public sector are a growing part of that mix.'
One such notable company, Phenix Technologies, based in Accident (but with offices around the globe), is an internationally recognized manufacturer of high-voltage test equipment. And the Beitzel Corporation and its sister company, Pillar Innovations, are among the region's other major employers.
