2025 Heise Award Winner

The winner of the 2025 Heise Entrepreneurial Spirit Award was announced during the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Membership Meeting & Dinner on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. Martin Heise made the presentation to this year’s winner, Kate Collins of JG’s Pub.
For more than 26 years, Kate has served as the face and force behind JG’s Pub, a Deep Creek Lake institution known for its warm hospitality, legendary food, and unmistakable character. Originally founded in 1988 by her father, John Ambrose, and his friend Glen Lyons, JG’s quickly became a local favorite. Kate stepped into ownership alongside her husband Fred Collins in 1998 and has since steered the pub through economic changes, personal loss, and countless industry challenges—all with an unwavering dedication to quality, community, and connection.

When Fred passed away unexpectedly in 2022, Kate once again rose to meet adversity with remarkable strength, maintaining JG’s status not only as a successful business, but as a cherished local landmark where memories are made and shared. Whether serving up the “biggest wings on the lake,” her famously hearty cheesesteaks, or the infamously “almost famous” Freddy Juice, Kate has infused JG’s with heart, humor, and an unmistakable sense of home.

Kate’s contributions go far beyond the doors of her pub. Her philanthropic reach includes support for organizations such as Toys for Tots, Special Olympics Maryland, the Dove Center, HART for Animals, and local fire and rescue departments. She has hosted and organized events like the “Unofficial” Post Dunk Party, fundraisers for Cindy’s Fund, and the “Doug for Dove” benefit—all reflecting her passion for giving back to her community.

Known for her ethical leadership and dedication to her staff, Kate fosters a work environment rooted in respect and loyalty. She continues to mentor young employees, support fellow small businesses, and promote community spirit in everything she does.

“Kate Collins doesn’t just represent the entrepreneurial spirit this award was created to celebrate—she lives it every single day,” said Nick Sharps, Interim President of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce. “Through loss, challenge, and change, she has continued to lead with heart, humor, and grit. Kate’s impact on Garrett County goes far beyond her business—she’s created a place where people feel like they belong, and that’s something truly special.”
