Garrett College Continuing Education and Workforce Development has scheduled a class, Beyond the String: Watercolor Basics with Mary Kay Barnes – Zentangle®, at the College’s Northern Outreach Center in Grantsville on Wednesdays, September 7 to 28, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. In this course, students will explore the properties of transparent watercolor paints and compositional design for paintings, watercolor sketching and use with the Zentangle® method of drawing. Techniques, such as wet on wet, dry brush and washes will be explained and demonstrated. Values and composition will be discussed and defined. Physical properties and composition of watercolor papers and how this determines a paintings outcome will be demonstrated. All the basics of watercolor media will be highlighted and explained; paint, paper, brushes, plein air painting and studio painting. Supplies for this course will be provided. No previous experience is required in Zenangle® or watercolor. The course is being instructed by Certified Zentangle® teacher, Mary Kay Barnes, a lifetime signature member of the West Virginia Watercolor Society, a juried member of Tamarack for her watercolor notecards, copper enamel jewelry and the gallery. She paints and exhibits in Florida and West Virginia and specializes in plein air painting.
