What Makes for a Strong Heritage Project Grant Application? Here Are 4 Tips to Help You Apply!

The Maryland Heritage Areas Authority (MHAA) Grant Program provides dollar-for-dollar matching grants to nonprofit organizations and government entities for capital and non-capital projects located within a Certified Heritage Area. Grants can support projects involving historical, cultural or natural resources, sites, events or facilities. Eligible projects must have a heritage tourism component or contribute to research that will directly inform a heritage tourism product.

But what makes for a Strong Heritage Project Grand Application? Here are a few quick and useful hints…

1. Clearly defined projects

Reviewers want to see that project objectives and methods to accomplish those objectives are clearly stated and what the end products/results will be.

2. Strong ties to the Heritage Area Themes, Management Plan, 5-Year Plan, and/or Annual Work Plan as well as MHAA’s program goals

It’s extremely important to show how the project is consistent with the above goals. Extracting and stating which sections of these plans are consistent with the project is helpful to highlight this tie.

3. Why projects must be completed now (urgency)

Is it critical that the project be accomplished within a limited timeframe or is there a special anniversary or time-limited opportunity?

4. Detailed Budget

It is crucial that the scope of work matches your budget. Be specific – include breakdowns in line items including detail such as Brochures: 5,000 at $.05 a piece or Exhibit Construction – 25 hours @ $50/hour.
